Greek Smashed Lemon Potatoes

Looking for a really good potato side dish? Maybe you want to do something different with your potatoes? Or you have guests coming over and would like to make a crowd pleasing side? These crispy smashed potatoes are definitely for you! You need about an hour to make them, really easy with only a few minutes of hands on time. If all this wasn’t enough, these potatoes are smothered in gorgeous Greek flavors. Give them a try today. Crispy and golden on the outside, while soft and fluffy on the inside. Let’s get that oven fired up!



  • 6 medium-sized potatoes, Yukon Golds are the best
  • Whole or cut in half, your choice
  • 3 tbsp melted butter and 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice, juice of half a lemon
  • 4 cloves garlic , crushed


  • 2 tsp dried oregano , divided
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon semolina, optional for extra crispy potatoes
  • Cheese topping are optional, but simple is better



  • Preheat the oven to broil, setting to medium high heat about 400°F
  • Place potatoes in a large pot of salted water
  • Bring to the boil, cook covered for 30-35 minutes or until just fork tender
  • Keep a watch and don’t over cook to mush
  • Drain well
  • Grease a large baking sheet with olive oil
  • Arrange potatoes onto the sheet and use a potato masher to lightly flatten
  • Not too hard or they will end up mashed potatoes
  • Mix together the butter, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic
  • Pour the mixture over each potato
  • Sprinkle with half of the oregano, salt and pepper
  • Sprinkle with semolina and cheese if using
  • Broil until they are golden and crispy
  • Remove from oven, sprinkle with remaining oregano


To serve, season with a little extra salt and pepper and serve immediately. A great side for any of your favorite dishes or how about a Greek Gyros? We can stay in the same country can’t we?
